The Kijang Coin derived its name from the motif of a Malayan barking deer, or kijang, embossed on its obverse side. Most probably, these coins originated from Fanam, South India, and were brought in by Indian traders. Their dates are difficult to be determined, as none of the coins has their minting dates noted.

It is believed that the Kijang Coins were issued from 1400. The Kijang Coins were associated with Che Siti Wan Kembang, the female ruler of Kelantan that was very fond of her pet ‘barking deer’ and inscribed the kijang illustration on the gold coins. The Kijang was adopted on the Bank Negara Malaysia's logo in 1964 as it was gold, thus indicating value and prestige. It was also among the earliest Malay Sultanate coins featuring an animal motif. There were 8 types / classes of Kijang Coins issued. Each type / class featured different illustration of Kijang. http://bit.ly/2QnbBds

The Logo’s Inspiration: In 1964, the first Malaysian Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali, was fond of a gold Kelantanese Kijang coin for its value and prestige. Unlike most early coins from the Malay Peninsula -which only had Jawi scriptures, this gold coin featured a barking deer. Tun Ismail then commissioned a Malaysian sculptor, the late Abdul Wahab Haji Tahir, to create the logo based on the gold coin's representation of the barking deer.
